Tropical twist: Beach fashion show adds melanoma message – Pittsburgh Tribune

From the music to the decor to the clothes, things will be just beachy at the American Cancer Society Four Corners Unit’s 22nd annual luncheon and fashion show fundraiser.

“Life’s a Beach” is the theme of this year’s event, April 14 at New Kensington’s Clarion Hotel. The event promises food, prizes and a peek at the latest fashions, many of them, with a tropical twist.

The fundraiser, however, is about more than just sun and fun, says the show’s commentator, Kathy Logan.

The group focuses on promoting a message annually and this year the attention turns to skin-cancer prevention, she says. “We thought the beach was an appropriate theme. We’re actually going to have a mini-message from someone from the Melanoma Society, and we’re going to make sure everyone gets a little bottle of sunscreen to take home with them.”

A Chinese auction, a 50-50 raffle, mystery gift bags, a silent auction and a bake sale will be featured during the event.

“We’re very blessed each year with this event,” Logan says. “The businesses are very generous. We have some really nice things this year, some artwork, some sculpture, some African art.”

Prizes include gift certificates for local restaurants, golfing packages, a hand-crafted dollhouse and getaways to Seven Springs, Pittsburgh and Erie.

After the noon lunch, volunteers will take to the runway, wearing fashions contributed from a number of area shops and retailers, including Macy’s, J.C. Penney, Top Hat Tuxedo, Apparel House and Babe’s Broadway Bridal.

The presentation will wrap up with beach wedding fashions.

The show’s beauty goes beyond the runway. It’s also found in the hope and inspiration offered by such an event.

“It’s just an uplifting experience,” Joanne Cecchi says. “You don’t realize how much encouragement and support you get from events like this.”

The Allegheny Township woman will be recognized at the fashion show with a Glimmer of Hope pin.

“I really feel like I benefitted from the research they’re doing,” she says. “Now, those of us that have survived, we have to help raise that money for someone else.”

Last year’s event raised more than $20,000 for research, community education and services for local patients. About 400 attend the show.

“To me, that many people coming together for the cause will be what I take away from it, more so than the luncheon or the fashion show,” Cecchi says. “All those people coming together for a common cause so that someday, the big C word isn’t ‘cancer,’ it’s ‘cure.’”

Celebrity Fashion: SELENA GOMEZ Looks Cute And Sexy In Dolce & Gabbana Two-Piece At The 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards

SELENA GOMEZ looked awfully cute and sexy in her two-piece Dolce Gabbana ensemble at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards last Saturday.

Looks like she’s really loving the two-piece outfits!

Last spotted in bikinis for her recently wrapped up filming of “Spring Breakers,” Selena Gomez dons another belly-baring two-piece outfit from Dolce Gabbana for the Nickelodeon’s 25th Kids’ Choice Awards held at the Galen Center in LA.

The actress, who finally reunites with her slimy boyfriend Justin Bieber at the event and wins as Favorite TV Actress for “Wizards of Waverly Place,” was the perfect mixture of adorable and sexy without looking trashy with her pale pink midriff bustier, two-toned bejeweled skirt and studded pink-and-orange Cesare Paciotti heels.

Smokey blue-lined eyes, pale pink lips and tousled waves complimented and provided her KCA look just right amount of edge.

We’re totally digging this look, as she was able to grace the Kids’ event without compromising her apparent sexiness. Thank goodness she didn’t get slimed at the event!

Do you think Selena is worthy to be deemed best dressed at the KCAs?

Celebrity Fashion: KATY PERRY Rocks Slimed Sports Bra And Skirt Ensemble At The 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards

KATY PERRY rocked her slimed sports bra and skirt ensemble at the 2012 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards last Saturday.

MTO 004325

No one could ever miss Katy Perry in all her usual colorful glory at the Nickelodeon’s 25th Kids’ Choice Awards held at the Galen Center in LA last Saturday. The newly-divorced pop singer dared to dress up in a two-piece outfit that consisted of an already-slimed sports bra and a green-and-white splat-print skirt at the event known for dumping unbelievable amounts of green goo on award winners.

Katy paired her bright outfit with green peep-toe pumps, neon green bracelet and an extra long blue-and-purple high ponytail. How clever… Now people would know that sliming her would be totally absurd!

The KCA winner, who bagged the Favorite Voice award for her role in “The Smurfs,” finished off her look with smokey eyes and crimson lips.

Michelle Obama, Taylor Swift Fashion Face-Off At The Kids’ Choice Awards! (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Michelle Obama Taylor Swift

In a fashion battle between Taylor Swift and Michelle Obama, one would assume the bright, sparkly uber-celebrity would take the cake. Sure, the first lady is one of the most fashionable women to ever occupy the White House. But she’s also, like, a mom.

But against all odds, FLOTUS blew T-Swift out of the water — er, slime — at Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday night. Michelle was on hand with Sasha and Malia to award Swift Nickelodeon’s Big Help Award, recognizing her charitable work.

“Taylor Swift may be in the news,” said Mrs. Obama from the stage, “for the award-winning songs and multiplatinum records, but every step of the way she has always made it a point to give back. She’s supported children’s charities, she’s worked to combat bullying, and given over tens of thousands of books to schools and libraries all around the country.”

But despite Taylor’s own superstardom, the pop singer was starstruck when she took the stage with Michelle. “I’ve always wanted to meet you! This is amazing. I’m so honored to get… to be receiving this award from the First Lady of the United States — I’m freaking out.”

So were we, considering how good the first lady looked! No pantsuits or broaches here — for an event that included pop music, green slime and guests like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, the first lady chose a youthful outfit: metallic skinny jeans, a sequined v-neck top and black pointy-toes pumps.

To be honest, we’d sooner expect to see T-Swift in such an ensemble than the first lady. But when it comes to fashion, Michelle Obama is always full of surprises.

See our stylish first lady below. Did Michelle outshine Taylor?

Fashion Meets Flowers at Fleurotica 2012

Spring was literally in the air at the recent Fleurotica Fashion Show where all of the breathtaking designs were constructed of flowers, leaves and other plant materials!   More than 300 people enjoyed this runway competition benefitting Garfield Park Conservatory presented by leading floral designers and one real life fashion designer, Peach Carr.

The evening included an Iron Florist competition between two Park District volunteers, Matt Barrett and Peter Vrotsos, with each creating an arrangement from the same materials within 15 minutes.  They were both equally stunning and were auctioned off later in the live auction.

Presenting designers included Anna Held,  Event Creative, Bakman Floral Designs, Flower Child, Flower Petal, Green Jeans, Ildiko Phillips Designs, Juicy Designs, Blumgarten Co., Natural Beauties Floral, Peach Carr Designs, Scarlet Petal, Stemline Creative and Whole Foods Market South Loop.  There were designs made from moss, succulents, leaves and every kind of flower imaginable.  There was even a real “tulip skirt” presented by Whole Foods!  Juicy Designs featured the Virgin Mary made from carnations, daisies and roses who closed her segment with praying hands.   A bride floated down the runway, again created by Whole Foods, in a tulle gown completely covered with white rose petals.  At the end of the runway, she tossed her bouquet into the crowd.

Eunita Rushing, President of the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance who presented the event, introduced two students from the Green Teens Program.  Patrick Grandberrry and Zatiana Ross  told the audience their favorite parts of the program were learning about plants and how to create resumes for after school jobs.

Event Chair Richard Wester did an outstanding job along with judges Dennis Remer (Frost Production), Christy Webber (Christy Webber Landscapes), Borris Powell (designer) and Adam Schwerner (Director of Natural Resources for the Chicago Park District).   NBC’s LeeAnn Trotter returned again this year as the delightful emcee.

More than $119,000 was raised to benefit Garfield Park Conservatory’s  programs and to repair their storm damaged roof devastated by last summer’s hailstorm.

Classics reign in Pulse fashion tournament

In the end, it was a classic against a trend.

Pulse Pandemonium

Over the course of five rounds, Tribune readers voted in a bracket-style tournament we called Pulse Pandemonium. After eliminating 62 fashion and beauty trends, the perennially popular little black dress was paired against the summery maxi dress. The LBD won.

Frequent Love It or Hate It voter Bill Clark — not the Tribune columnist of the same name — said he was happy to see the voting go the way it did.

“I grew up watching Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Katharine Hepburn and others like them in the movies. I have always associated the classic styles as elegant and sophisticated. So the little black dress, pearls, ballet flats and riding boots were favorites,” Clark said.

He is hoping the results of this informal tournament reflect a move toward more decorum in dressing.

“I’m always hoping for a time when people may again embrace elegant fashion. In this era of pajamas worn in public, gym clothes worn out to restaurants and women tattooed like carnival workers, I appreciate any time I see someone who has put some thought into the way they look,” Clark said.

Vanessa Hall, who also voted in the tournament, noted that although trendier items get more attention — especially from younger people, for whom the revised style statements of past generations are still novel — those classic pieces are always part of the sartorial consciousness.

“I wasn’t really hoping for any set outcome, believing that there would be more voting interest from today’s youth, and have been imminently curious about how the young folks would vote. It does not at all surprise me that the classics are what have lasted,” Hall said.

As in the college basketball tournament, some of the early matchups generated upsets.

“The worst pairing was hoodie versus LBD. I love, love oversized hoodies and wear them all the time. … Maybe hoodies should have been put up against the maxi dress,” Amy Swiney said.

Similarly, the ubiquitous flip-flop and denim skirt were knocked out after the first round while less-common items such as capes and leather skirts progressed.

Cheri Ghan was hoping animal print would advance further than it did.

“I actually consider it a bit of a classic. You can look back through generations of apparel and find it,” she said.

Although she voted opposite the majority in many of the matchups, Ghan isn’t disappointed in the results.

“I hoped my fashion sense would be validated. On the other hand, I might consider my busted brackets make me a trendsetter,” she said.
